How to Practice and Memorize Interview Answers

Prepare Your Answers

First, prepare your answers. Depending on the type of interview you’re preparing for and the questions you expect, you may use different answer structures.

For behavioral questions, use STAR: Situation, Task, Action, and Result. For “Tell me about yourself,” organize your answer around your background, relevant experience, and why you’re interested in the position.

Build your answers around your actual experience. Once they’re prepared, add them to ViaVinco and break each answer into sections you can practice individually.

ViaVinco puts the step-by-step memorization method into one practice system.

Break Each Answer Into Sections

Place each natural section in its own paragraph. Each paragraph becomes a section you can practice individually.

For “Tell me about yourself,” you might use:

  • Your current role or professional background
  • Relevant experience and accomplishments
  • Why you are interested in this position

For behavioral questions such as “Tell me about a time you solved a problem,” organize your answer using STAR:

  • Situation: What was happening?
  • Task: What were you responsible for?
  • Action: What did you do?
  • Result: What happened?

If you remember the situation but keep forgetting the actions you took, focus on the Action section instead of starting the entire answer over every time.

Practice the full talk track or one section at a time using the same four steps.

1. Listen and read along

Listen and read along on a continuous loop.

Follow the transcript while the audio plays. Pay attention to the sequence of events, the details you need to remember, and how each section connects to the next.

Loop an individual section when it needs more repetition. For “Tell me about yourself,” that might be the explanation connecting your experience to the position. For a behavioral answer, it might be the actions you took or the result.

Return to the complete answer to learn how the sections fit together.

2. Write it out

Write the information out by hand and upload a photo.

Write the complete answer or the section you are practicing. You can refer to the transcript as you write. Check names, responsibilities, numbers, and other details against your prepared answer.

Upload a photo to keep your handwritten practice with your talk track in ViaVinco.

3. Record

Once you know the information well enough, record yourself reciting the talk track aloud without the transcript or audio.

Record one section or the complete answer. Speak at a conversational pace and explain your experience clearly. Keep the facts accurate, including what you personally contributed.

As you become familiar with an answer, record it in response to differently worded questions. Choose the details that address the question being asked. The same experience may demonstrate problem-solving, teamwork, or initiative, depending on what you explain.

4. Review

Listen back to your recordings and review your progress over time.

Check whether you answered the question, remembered the important details, and explained your role clearly.

For “Tell me about yourself,” listen for a clear connection between your background and the position. For a STAR answer, check that you explained your actions and the result.

Identify missing details, long pauses, or sections where you lost your train of thought. Compare recordings to hear how your recall and delivery change.

Repeat the System

Return to the sections that need work. Listen and read along, write them out, record, and review.

Then practice the complete answer again. Continue working with individual sections and full answers as you prepare for the interview.

You create the answers. ViaVinco gives you the system to practice them.
